Norwich City FC Unveils Plans for Community Courts at The Nest
Norwich City Football Club is embracing the padel boom with plans to build three new padel courts at The Nest, in Horsford, the football club’s community sports and wellbeing hub. The initiative, led by the club’s Community Sports Foundation, marks Phase 4 of the site’s development and aims to make padel accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.
The proposed courts – two covered and one outdoor – will be developed in partnership with Chaplin Farrant and RUA. Designed to accommodate up to 800 users per week and attract over 40,000 annual visitors, the facilities will include racket hire, changing areas, indoor viewing spaces, and outdoor social zones such as table tennis and vending areas.
Jackie Thornton, Director of Strategy and Development at the Foundation, described the expansion as “bold investment in health, inclusion and opportunity” The courts will host inclusive coaching sessions, disability padel programs, youth holiday camps, and subsidised access for underrepresented groups. The Foundation’s Youth Voice Council is actively involved in shaping programming to ensure the courts meet diverse community needs.
The project also addresses local health challenges. In Broadland, where The Nest is located, 17.8% of residents are inactive, with higher rates among older adults and those in deprived areas. By offering dedicated sessions for inactive and vulnerable groups, the padel courts aim to boost physical activity and foster social connection.
Norwich City’s move reflects a broader trend among English football clubs investing in padel infrastructure to promote health, fitness, and community engagement. Notts County, Liverpool and Manchester City are just some of the other notable clubs integrating padel into their facilities, underscoring the sport’s rise in popularity and its potential to unite communities through accessible, engaging recreation.
