Padel Arrives in Portobello: Powerleague Launches Edinburgh’s First Coastal Courts
Powerleague has officially launched Portobello’s first-ever padel courts, bringing the world’s fastest-growing racket sport to Edinburgh’s scenic coastline. Following a £600,000 investment, the new facility opened on 30 August 2025, transforming the city’s popular football hub into a multi-sport destination.
Located just minutes from Portobello Beach, the upgraded Powerleague site now features three covered padel courts, allowing for year-round play regardless of weather. The courts are open to all on a pay-and-play basis, with 60- and 90-minute sessions available for beginners and seasoned players alike. Prices start from just £7 per person, making padel accessible to locals and tourists alike.
To celebrate the launch, Powerleague is hosting an opening party on Thursday 4 September, complete with free “Intro to Padel” sessions, a social tournament, food, drinks, and a live DJ. The event aims to introduce the sport to the wider community and foster a vibrant padel culture in Edinburgh.
“Portobello is already a thriving hub for sport and community,” said Christian Rose, CEO of Powerleague. “Our mission is to open up access to the physical, mental, and social benefits that team sports bring. Padel is a fun, social sport for all ages and abilities.”
The courts include a refurbished viewing area connected to the on-site bar, allowing spectators to enjoy matches in comfort. Introductory lessons and social events will run throughout the year, with coaching available for all skill levels.
This launch is part of Powerleague’s broader £2.2 million investment in padel across Scotland, signaling a major commitment to expanding the sport’s footprint nationwide.
